I am a lawyer. There seems to be a lack of understanding among most non-lawyers regarding the law and how it affects their lives. Simply put, most people do not know their rights, nor their duties under the law. </P> <P>I have been an attorney since May of 1993 in Florida, defending professionals that get sued for malpractice; this includes attorneys getting sued for legal malpractice. There is a common misconception among lay persons that all lawyers know all the law. Quite frankly, we do not. We are allowed to practice in almost any field of law, however, most attorneys specialize because there are so many laws. (The ten commandments just had too many loopholes.)</P> <P>If most lawyers do not even know all the law, then it is rather obvious that most lay persons do not either. Other than the hardened criminals who have been through the routine more often than their attorney <U>du</U> <U>jour</U>, there are very few people that really do know what to do when they are stopped by a police officer; few people know what to do if they are in a car accident; band members do not know how to protect their own band name, let alone their songs; photographers do not know how to get paid for their work. There is also a sense that "the system" won't work or it's just too expensive to be worth it anyway, so, many people just accept that they are screwed.</P> <P>If you are a little late on your rent, you told your landlord about it in advance, you get home and there is an eviction notice on your door, in a panic, not wanting everything you own out on the street, you...call me Sunday afternoon while I am trying to watch a game. Truth be told, I can't help you. I don't know the answer. I know how to find the answer, but by that time...you get the point. </P> <P>That is why I have started this website. I am trying to address different legal issues many people are curious about, by having an attorney that specializes in each particular field of law write an article explaining it. That is why I refer to Cafe Law as "we" and "us", not "I"or "me". I am not trying to mislead anyone, but, I could not do this alone. I need to get help from different attorneys that specialize or concentrate in the different areas of law. The law and legal issues are the hot topic in the '90s, just as exercise was in the '80s.
